Carpet for stairs against slippery staircases

About 1,319 fatal staircases have occurred in 2018, according to statistics from the Federal Statistical Office. The reason is a fast running on the stairs or slippery socks. To make your staircase in the apartment safer, we recommend you buy step mats. The staircase saver not only prevents slipping, but also dampens the volume of the kicks.

In households with children or animals, such as carpet for stairs are highly recommended, as robes and rolls sometimes run up or down the stairs. What materials the staircases are made of, how to keep the mats clean and what you should continue to consider when buying.

Carpet for stairs against slippery staircases

Stairs inside the apartment are often made of wood and can quickly become slippery when you change floors in socks. In order to limit the step load of the steps, you can attach stair mats. The staircases cushion your gait and dampen the stepping sounds. Similar to carpets, the material is very pleasant for the feet – usually soft and warm.

You can either screw the carpet for stairs or attach them with double-sided tape. Most mats are already supplied with a glue strip at the bottom, which means you have less effort to attach.

The usual staircase in the house consists of 15 steps, which is why the stairwell mats are usually sold in sets. So you don’t have to buy the step mats individually and can save something. You can make individual trimmings on mats without a chained edge. In order to avoid mistakes, it is also possible to order the custom mat from specialist retailers.

The shapes of the carpet for stairs are rectangular or semicircular. If you want to cover as much area of your stage as possible, we recommend an angular step mat. If you are looking for a narrow step mat, the semicircular variants are recommended. If you want the staircase stopper for your spiral staircase, you should take extra care that the mat still sits well even in the narrowest place and does not protrude beyond the edge of the step.

Especially in the colder seasons, the staircase on the doorstep can also become a slipway. To make the stairs slip-proof, make sure the mat is weatherproof. Most outdoor models are made of rubber. Patterns or depressions strengthen the slip and beautify your staircase.

By the way, there has not yet been a step-matte test of the Stiftung Warentest.

Different materials and their advantages

The stair protection mats are made from different materials. For the interior, comfort is usually an important factor, which makes many models made of synthetic fibres. The “Design” category is also essential, as you see the mats every day. A beautiful color that fits your décor is significant to make you feel comfortable with the staircase protection. However, materials such as rubber or aluminium are rarely dyed by manufacturers, as they are deliberately kept simple. You can find out why this is the case below.

Artificial fibre polypropylene: High running comfort and durable

The synthetic fibre polypropylene is used for many carpets on stairs. The advantage is that the material is very durable, soft and warm – also barefoot it is pleasant to walk on these mats. Polypropylene staircases are available in many colors, as the fibre is easy to color. If the edge is glued to the mat, you won’t be able to make any changes to it. If you need a certain cut, we recommend that you commission it from specialist retailers.

Natural fibre sisal: Durable and inclusive foot massage

Step mats made of sisal impress not only with their beautiful appearance, but also with their longevity and firm structure. The rough surface is often unpleasant for untrained barefoot runners, but many people perceive the aisle via a sisal carpet as a pleasant massage unit.

Rubber: Inslip-resistant on external staircases

Stable mats made of rubber are particularly suitable for outdoor use. Whether the basement staircase to the garden or the entrance to the front door – especially in wet conditions, the steps should be slip-proof. Rubber mats are also easy to care for. If you are dirty, you can also clean them with a high-pressure cleaner. By patterns or different depressions in the anti-slip mat for the stairs, the risk of slipping is further reduced and your staircase is also embellished.

Metal aluminium: Corrosion-resistant and stable

Especially steps that are often used (e.g. stairwell, office, doctor’s office) require a staircase protection to reduce wear and tear. In order for such stairs to become non-slip, aluminium is particularly well suited as a material of the step mat, as it is very stable and also corrosion resistant. These mats are best screwed because a glue reaches its shelf life limits at such a high load. Stage mats made of aluminium are suitable for outdoor and indoor use. However, note that running with socks on aluminum increases the risk of slipping.

Plastic polycarbonate: View of the step material remains

If you do not want a carpet on the stairs, as you like the grain of the wood or want to admire the marble pattern, we recommend plastic mats. These are mostly made of polycarbonate because it has a highlight permeability. Transparency allows you to admire your steps and enjoy the safety of a non-slip mat.

The following advantages and disadvantages arise for the most commonly used material polypropylene compared to the others:

High running comfort
diverse in shape and color
No drilling necessary

No step mats for outdoor use
